FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS TO HELP UPGRADE RECREATIONAL FACILITIES IN HARBOUR GRACE AND CARBONEAR
Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador

The Town of Carbonear will upgrade its swimming pool and the Town of Harbour Grace will refurbish the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium with the support of federal funding provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Senator Fabian Manning made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister of the Atlantic Gateway and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador. The federal assistance will provide more than $183,000 for significant upgrades to the Carbonear swimming pool and nearly $85,000 to refurbish the arena in Harbour Grace.

“The S. W. Moores Memorial Stadium has been serving the people of the Trinity-Conception area for more than 50 years, and the swimming pool in Carbonear is a focal point for recreational activities for all age-groups,” said Senator Manning. “While each renovation project is creating jobs now, the improvements will also help ensure these facilities continue to serve area residents for many years to come.”

The refurbishing project for the S.W Moores arena includes new rink boards, glass and netting, new dressing rooms and heating system.

The Town of Carbonear will install a new dehumidifying system at the swimming pool which will incorporate heat recovery for the pool. The installation will also involve associated duct work and air conditioning at the facility.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building.

Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to submit their proposals.

For details on project eligibility and how to submit an application, please refer to the program backgrounder on ACOA’s website at www.acoa-apeca.gc.ca.
