The Government of Canada is investing an additional
$390,000 in the East Coast Music Awards Association over
the next two years. In addition, the government is
providing an additional $37,000 specifically in support for
this year’s award show taking place in Corner Brook.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Peter
MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the
Atlantic Gateway.
“In supporting the ECMAs, our government clearly recognizes
the tremendous cultural, social and economic value the
music industry has on Atlantic Canada”, said Minister
MacKay. “Our government has been a long-time supporter of
the East Coast Music industry, as part of a major
investment in arts and cultural organizations across the
country,” said Minister MacKay.
This additional investment, by the Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency, brings the total federal government
investment in the ECMAs since 1996 to more than $2.5
million.
The additional funding announced today is aimed at helping
the ECMA organization to undertake technological
improvements and increase the marketing of the awards both
nationally and internationally. The $390,000 figure for the
next two years includes more than $140,000 directed towards
international marketing efforts.
In 2006, Minister MacKay announced a $525,000 three-year
investment in the ECMAs ending in 2009. The multi-year
investment provided the ECMAs with a secure source of
funding over an extended period, enabling it to leverage
other funding options for its awards event.
The East Coast Music Association is a registered, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting
the success of the Atlantic Canadian music industry.
The annual East Coast Music Awards taking place in Corner
Brook this weekend recognizes the work and contributions of
music industry professionals, including musicians, sound
technicians, studio engineers, record companies, radio
stations and volunteers.
