The municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle and the Town of
Yarmouth will soon be able to treat contaminated soil for
reuse.
Federal, provincial and municipal funding of $546,000 was
announced today for the construction of a contaminated soil
treatment facility at the regional solid waste park in
South Ohio.
The funding, which is being provided through the
Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, was
announced today by the Honourable Richard Hurlburt,
Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations and
MP Greg Kerr, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of
Veterans Affairs.
“Treated the contaminated soil locally protects our
environment and is more cost-effective,” said Minister
Hurlburt. “This is another fine example of our communities
becoming more environmentally sustainable. A green future
starts with planning and projects we put in place today”
“Through projects such as this, the Government of Canada is
demonstrating its commitment to building strong, vibrant
competitive communities while ensuring a clean
environment,” said MP Kerr.
Under the Communities Component of the Building Canada
Fund, the federal, provincial and municipal governments
anticipate investing upwards of $111 million in
infrastructure projects in smaller, communities across Nova
Scotia, between now and 2014.
“Today’s investment enables communities to move forward
with important infrastructure projects,” said Lloyd Hines,
president of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. “We
will continue to work with our federal and provincial
partners to find long term solutions to our infrastructure
