THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS TOURISM AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN ANTIGONISH COUNTY
Lakevale, Nova Scotia

The Mini-Trail Community Centre in Lakevale will undergo major capital improvements thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada. The announcement was made in Lakevale today by the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The contribution of more than $65,000 will enable the centre to undertake upgrades that will enhance the 47-year facility’s ability to host a variety of community events and programs.

“The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is committed to supporting projects that build on local strengths and create long-term economic opportunity,” said Minister MacKay. “This facility has been a hub of social, cultural and educational activity for decades and exemplifies the vitality that makes our communities such a great place to live and work.”

The project will involve interior enhancements to the existing structure including washroom upgrades, the fabrication of a suspended acoustical ceiling and the installation of new flooring. Equipment purchases will include a stage, sound system, commercial stove, tables and chairs.

The Nova Scotia Office of Health Promotion and Protection is contributing $22,000 to the project and the Nova Scotia Economic Development will also be providing additional support.

“The Mini-Trail Community Centre is an important part of community life in this area,” said Peter Delaney, a Mini- Trail Community Centre Association board member. “These new upgrades will help to stimulate tourism, recreation and social activity in the 16 communities this facility represents.”

The Mini-Trail Community Centre Association is a charitable non-profit organization that offers community-based initiatives such as a cooperative craft store and Community Access Program (C@P) site for public internet access as well as training programs and a local tourist bureau. More than one thousand residents from 16 communities along Antigonish County's northern coastline benefit from the centre’s activities.

ACOA’s investment is being made through the Innovative Communities Fund, which focuses on investments which lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
