All three levels of government joined today with local
residents to mark the start of construction of a new
aquatic facility that will serve as a recreational hub for
Shippagan and Northeastern New Brunswick. Mike Allen,
Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac; Victor
Boudreau, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for
the Regional Development Corporation; and Jonathan Roch
Noël, Mayor of Shippagan, took part in the official sod-
turning ceremony.
“The Government of Canada is committed to working with its
partners to support projects that strengthen the economic
foundation of our communities and improve the quality of
life for the people who live and work in them,” said MP
Allen on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of
National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency (ACOA). “This facility will provide
lasting benefits for the people of Shippagan and
Northeastern New Brunswick. Our Government is proud to be
part of the team that is making it a reality.”
“The Province of New Brunswick is proud to be a partner
with the entire community of Shippagan and area in this
important community project,” said Minister Boudreau. “This
new facility will help improve the quality of life for area
residents, which will help us work toward our goal of self-
sufficiency for New Brunswick.”
"The municipality of Shippagan is pleased to move forward,
with the help of the various levels of government and the
public, on a major project for the construction of a
regional pool for the communities from Pokemouche to
Miscou," said Mayor Noël. "This facility will also provide
strategic leverage for the development of post-secondary
studies at our Université de Moncton and Collège
communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick campuses."
The project involves the construction of an aquatic
facility adjacent to the sport pavilion at the Université
de Moncton – Shippagan Campus. It is designed to serve as
a hub for aquatic recreation and community-based activities
in the region.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA, the Province of New
Brunswick and the Town of Shippagan each contributed
$1,137,605, or one-third of the $3,412,816 total eligible
project costs. Funding is made possible through the
Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund. An additional $390,000
will be provided by the Province of New Brunswick’s
Regional Development Corporation.
