Edmundston, N.B. – The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, joined with
key stakeholders in the translation industry today to
announce a $3.2 million investment by Canada’s New
Government in initiatives that will provide New Brunswick’s
translation industry with the support it needs to grow and
create opportunities.
Minister Cannon made the announcement on behalf of the
Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, at
City Hall in Edmundston.
“Canada’s New Government is working with its partners to
get things done for the people of New Brunswick,” said
Minister Cannon. “This investment of more than $3.2
million means New Brunswick’s translation industry can move
forward with new initiatives that will allow the industry
to contribute more significantly to the economy of Atlantic
Canada.”
“ACOA’s help will enable the New Brunswick Translation
Industry Council to better support the translation industry
and create a synergy to increase translation capacity. This
increased capacity will create conditions conducive to the
expansion and development of translation businesses in the
province,” stated Yvonne McLaughlin, president of the New
Brunswick Translation Industry Council.
Today’s announcement demonstrates the Government’s
commitment towards Canada’s official languages. Two
separate initiatives will benefit from this important
investment. Led by the New Brunswick Translation Industry
Council, the first consists of establishing an office for
the Council, complete with the staff and equipment
necessary to implement its projects. This new office will
give the Council the tools it needs to advance, unite and
support the translation industry. Canada’s New Government,
through ACOA, has invested $725,000 in this initiative.
The Council’s office will be located in Campbellton.
The second is an initiative that will be led by the Centre
international pour le développement de l’inforoute en
français (CIDIF). The CIDIF initiative is to establish a
centre with a focus on the transfer of expertise and
support services in the field of linguistic services to
develop and grow the translation industry. The project
features four key development areas: support services,
brokerage services, technology transfer and research and
development. Canada’s New Government, through ACOA, is
investing $2,529,506 in this initiative.
“As president of the Board of Directors of CIDIF, I am pleased to see that, more than ever, the Centre is a player on which partners can count, not only as proponent of a growth-generating project for New Brunswick and the northwestern part of the province, but also as a creator of jobs,” noted Bernard Imbeault, president of CIDIF.
