The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency today announced
funding for the Town of Souris in support of their plans
for a new marina, marina service building, and streetscape
improvements to the road linking downtown Souris and the
waterfront.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to contribute more
than $500,000 to this venture as its social and economic
benefits will be felt in the town and surrounding areas,”
stated the Hon. Lawrence MacAulay on behalf of the Atlantic
Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). “These improvements
are great news for all those seeking to enjoy boating, eco-
tourism and other culture related activities in and around
this community.”
The Souris Recreational Waterfront Committee (SRWC) was
established by the Town of Souris to seek out and implement
development plans for the waterfront. The SRWC has
representatives from a number of stakeholders including:
The Town of Souris; The Eastern Kings Community Enhancement
Corporation; the Souris Port Committee; the Eastern Kings
Ice Cooperative; and, the Souris West Community Council.
The Committee’s goal is to implement Phase 1 of the
development plan and manage day-to-day operations of the
marina once it is up and running.
“The plans for the new marina and the upgrades to Mariners
Park will make Souris an even more attractive tourist
destination, just another great reason for Islanders and
vacationers alike to visit this part of eastern Prince
Edward Island,” commented Gus Clinton, Deputy Mayor of the
Town of Souris and Chair of the SRWC.
ACOA is providing a non-repayable contribution of $556,081 through the Strategic Community Investment Fund. Launched three years ago, the Strategic Community Investment Fund was designed to help communities throughout Atlantic Canada create an environment that fosters economic development by addressing strategic sectors such as tourism.
